New ASTM test method for concrete surface preparation

The texture of concrete is one of the most important characteristics of a coating or overlayment bonding. A new ASTM International standard now fulfills the need within the concrete surface preparation field for a means of measuring and permanently replicating the profile of a concrete coated building surface.
ASTM D7682, Test Method for Replication and Measurement of Concrete Surface Profiles Using Replica Putty, was developed by Subcommittee D01.46 on Industrial Protective Coatings, part of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications.
The new standard will be useful to different parties. E.g. coating manufacturers can designate within the product data sheet the range requirements for the coating being used on the project, and engineers can write specifications utilizing the coating manufacturer’s product data sheets that designate a profile range for the required coating.

Bayer Coating Materials

The global economic recovery showered unexpected sales volume on Bayer MaterialScience’s coatings, polyurethanes and other segments in 2010, reaping triple earnings and double-digit sales for the Bayer Group business for the year.

Bayer’s high-tech materials business recovered more quickly than expected from the recession, notching a 35% increase in sales, to €10.15 million (about $14.14 million US) for 2010, the company announced.

The higher sales volumes, combined with higher selling prices and favorable exchange rates, tripled the company’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), to €1.35 million (about $1.88 million US).

Dr. Marijn Dekkers

Bayer Group

MaterialScience rebounded more
quickly from the global recession
than other Bayer Group businesses,
said Dr. Marijn Dekkers,
Management Board Chairman.

“Here we see the growth in demand from key customer industries as a major positive factor,” Dr. Marijn Dekkers, Management Board Chairman, said Monday (Feb. 28) at the Group’s global headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany.

“This applies particularly to the automotive and electrical/electronics sectors, and in some regions to the construction industry as well.”

Unlike Bayer’s CropScience and HealthCare subgroups, volumes at MaterialScience returned to pre-crisis levels in 2010, the company said. Bayer MaterialScience is one of the world’s largest polymer companies.

Segment Performance

The Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties business unit posted sales of €1.79 million, up 31.3% (27.2% on a currency- and portfolio-adjusted basis) from 2009. Significantly higher volumes were reported in all product groups and regions, with rising demand in Asia/Pacific and Europe having a particularly positive effect.

Selling prices were low in the first quarter, but the company raised them throughout the year, restoring prices for the year as a whole to 2009 levels.

Sales of the Polyurethanes business unit advanced by 32.8% (Fx adj. +27.8%), to €5.02 million. Significantly higher volumes were reported in all product groups—diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and polyether—and in all regions.

The largest increases in absolute terms were registered in Europe and Asia/Pacific, where the company significantly raised selling prices. This compensated for price stagnation in Latin America/Africa/Middle East and North America.

Sales of the Polycarbonates business unit climbed by 49% (Fx adj. +42.9%) to €2.79 million, largely due to substantial volume and price increases in the granules product group. Sales of polycarbonate sheet/semi-finished products also increased.

Sales of Industrial Operations gained 9.6% (Fx adj. +7.7%) to €548 million. Significant volume increases in Europe and North America—the two primary regional markets—more than offset the drop in prices.

India Plant Opens

Bayer MaterialScience has opened a manufacturing facility for polyisocyanates at Ankleshwar, in the state of Gujarat, India. Polyisocyanates are used as raw materials for the production of polyurethane coatings and adhesives. With the €20 million investment (about $27.87 million US), the company plans to expand its business in India, where it reports strong growth in the local market for coatings and adhesives.

The initial capacity will be 15,000 tons per year, increasing as production needs dictate. Ankleshwar is one of India’s biggest chemical manufacturing centers.

Growth, Green Demand Seen For Global Protective Coatings

From acrylic resins to protective coatings, the global paint and coatings market is rebounding, but manufacturers will have to scramble to satisfy the market’s ever-growing eco-friendly product demands, new market forecasts indicate.

The challenge will be especially great in protective coatings, where solvent-based products still dominate the market, reports An Overview of the Global Protective Coatings Market, 2nd Edition.

The report foresees 5% to 7% annual growth by protective coatings in the emerging markets but warns of a major shortfall in the greener protective coatings that are in growing global demand.

‘Lower VOC Will Be the Future’

“The overwhelming opinion by the industry is that lower-VOC coatings will be the future,” says the report by Information Research Ltd. “However, globally, only 6% of protective coatings are water-based whilst traditional solvent-based coatings are consistently indicated as the major technology.”

Sherwin-Williams

“This is related to two main reasons: cost and ease of application,” the report adds.

London-based IRL, a division of Business Research Group, offers marketing research and analysis services to the global paints and coatings industries.

Economic Ups and Downs

“The global economic downturn has affected virtually every industry, including protective coatings,” IRL reports. “Regional growth in the sector mirrored regional economic development, with the roaring economies of China, India and Brazil showing positive growth but at a lower rate than five years ago.”

The report analyzes the protective coatings sector in 25 key economies worldwide. It includes intumescent coatings, anti-corrosive coatings and protective coatings; mergers and acquisitions; and investments. It includes paint supply summaries, supplier reports, and technologies for countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and the Americas, as well as a “Wish List” for the future needs of the protective coatings industry.

Growth Seen for Acrylic Resins

Elsewhere in the industry, the global market for acrylic resins should exceed 16.4 billion pounds by the year 2015, driven by increased demand for superior-performing and cost-effective products, as well as higher demand in Asia Pacific and other developing markets.

So forecasts Acrylic Resins: A Global Strategic Business Report, by Global Industry Analysts Inc. (GIA), a California-based market intelligence firm.

New product introductions and rising demand for eco-friendly products will also ignite market growth in the paint and coatings sector, which is the largest end-user of acrylic resins.

Acrylic-based paints and coatings deliver improved color stability, flexibility, weatherability, and enhanced solid content and finishes, GIA notes.

Consumption of acrylic resins by end-use markets is projected to exceed 4.4 billion pounds by 2012. The United States will continue to represent a major market, although Europe represents the largest regional market for acrylic resins worldwide, while Asia Pacific is expected to register the fastest growth—a CAGR of more than 3% from 2007 to 2015.
